During his time at SPJIMR, Dilip Jain embarked on a transformative journey to Ladakh for a DoCC project, where he encountered Sonam Wangchuk, renowned for his work in revolutionising education and community development. Although initially tethered by academic pursuits and urban responsibilities, Dilip’s passion for Ladakh persisted, leading him to make periodic visits until his involvement in the Ice Stupa Artificial Glacier project in 2014. Transitioning from sporadic support to dedicated involvement, Dilip played a pivotal role in the project’s development, facilitating resource acquisition and representing the team at prestigious events like the Rolex Award for Enterprise in 2016.

As the Ice Stupa Artificial Glacier project gained traction, Dilip collaborated with Sonam Wangchuk to conceive the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives (HIAL), relinquishing his business responsibilities to focus on its establishment. Serving as Sonam Wangchuk’s executive assistant, Dilip spearheaded various initiatives, including fundraising, networking, and event planning. His efforts culminated in securing government land allotment, entity registration, and income tax exemptions, alongside recruitment drives that bolstered the team to 20 members.

Recognised for his longstanding commitment, Dilip was honoured as a Founding Member of HIAL, leveraging his business acumen to integrate real-life enterprises into the institution’s curriculum. By fostering partnerships between schools and local businesses, Dilip envisions an educational model where students gain practical experience while funding their own education. Drawing from his experiences with Ascent Foundation, Dilip extends his mentorship to start-ups in both Mumbai and Ladakh, nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit among SECMOL alumni.
