About Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan

SPJIMR is a constituent unit of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, India’s premier non-profit that has for over seven decades worked in the cause of education and for preserving and promoting India’s rich cultural heritage.

The Bhavan was founded in 1938 by Kulapati Dr. K.M. Munshi, an accomplished lawyer, constitutional expert, author and India’s agriculture minister who launched the Vanmahotsava initiative in 1950 for ecological conservation. Vanmahotsav is now a week-long festival of tree planting celebrated every year in the month of July across India.

Dr. Munshi founded the Bhavan with the blessings of Mahatma Gandhi and the active support of several eminent leaders like Sardar Patel, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, Shri C. Rajagopalachari, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan and many other scholars and eminent professionals. The Bhavan is registered under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 and the Bombay Public Trust Act of 1950.

The Bhavan today has grown to have 120 kendras and units, eight overseas centres and 395 institutions with as many as 2,20,000 students on the rolls, an indication of the growth and widespread support and goodwill it has enjoyed over its 75 years of public service.

The Bhavan marked its platinum jubilee in 2013 and the 125th birth anniversary of the founder Kulapati Munshi in 2012. It was an occasion for twin celebrations that were led by the President of India, Dr. Pranab Mukherjee at a function in Mumbai on December 30, 2012.

"The real strength of the Bhavan would lie not so much in the number of its buildings or institutions it conducts nor in the volume of its assets and budget, nor even in the growing publications, cultural and educational activities. It would lie in the character, humility, selflessness and dedicated work of its devoted workers."

— Dr. K M Munshi

On the occasion, the President said: “Movements such as the Bhavan are the need of the day. The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan has stood the test of time and been a beacon light guiding Indians and foreigners alike in their path to live a balanced and wholesome life…Munshiji's dream of promoting ethical and spiritual values in day to day life is successfully accomplished by the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. I pay my compliments to the staff of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan for their tireless efforts in translating Munshiji’s vision into reality.”

It was the latest tribute for a towering institution that has received support, encouragement and praise from a galaxy of leaders over the years as the Bhavan expanded its service, grew in stature and came to be recognised as an institute of national eminence.

The Bhavan has many renowned personalities as its honorary members, including His Holiness The Dalai Lama, HRH The Prince of Wales, Mother Teresa and several former Presidents and Prime Ministers of India.
