Where Are My Limits?

Here in the next paragraph are snatches from the textbook 'Philosophy' authored by Bryan Greetham that I picked up and read almost a decade ago. 

Philosophy teaches us to live without certainty and yet without being paralysed by the hesitation. It asks us to accept doubts and uncertainty and search beyond the narrow confines of accepted opinions. Accepting nothing on trust, the philosopher asks what makes our assumptions rationally defensible. Even though we may think there is no need to question them and even though our conclusions make us uncomfortable, there is this unyielding quest to go beyond what we know and take for granted. Socrates said "unexamined life is not worth living". Thinking, feeling, intending, believing are all part of our everyday experiences. But do we understand these mental processes? We all search for order, meaning and value in our lives. In these days, we also throw a tighter personal cordon around ourselves, within the confines of the four walls and assisted by television and other gadgets. 

All these statements are copied from the textbook I mentioned above. I want to relate these to our own lives. Philosophy referred here is epistemology, one dealing with existence of knowledge, and not the metaphysics dealing with questions around God. I found these statements to be too invaluable not to share with the wider family. All of us like certainty, stability, comfort zones and a personal cordon, in varying degrees. And there was an era when all of the above could easily be experienced. In today's world, these isolate us from the rest and we get unofficially excommunicated.

Uncertainty and instability are realities of today's world. We try to shield ourselves by building a tighter personal cordon and create our own comfort zones. There is where the first statement of Philosophy is extremely important. Interpreting it to our current world, I believe dealing with uncertainty without being stressed out is the way forward for all of us. First, we get out of our comfort zones ourselves, without someone else doing it to us. That means to do something that appears different, difficult. That means we face uncertainty and instability. Learn to deal with it. One of the reasons that we feel uncertainty is when we believe that we have limitations e.g. I am not intelligent, I get tired quickly, I am physically weak, I do not have time, I am too busy. 

Question those limits. Are these really true? Have you ever tested these limits? One way of getting answers is to start believing that we have infinite energy and time. Next is put ourselves to test. Anyone who does this will probably survive; and if so, repeat it. We will realise that one can do many things at the same time, without getting tired, exhausted and still having all energy and enthusiasm to do everything smiling without feeling burdened. The book 'Present' by Spensor Johnson talks about living for this moment and same is what Sri Sri Ravishankar says.         

Another important aspect is self-reflection. Go for a walk, for a hike, be seated undisturbed somewhere, may be standing in a crowded train, be with yourself. Think of what is happening with you. Generate thoughts, ideas, concepts. It’s important to be with yourself at least a few minutes every day and at least an hour over weekends. This will add huge value, we will know what to do next. Something like Sudarshan Kriya is a source of infinite energy and enthusiasm. We may find something else. The means and tools are not important, what's important is to get into that flow.

In essence, to rise above everything else is to rise above yourself.

Thank you sir for such an lucid write up on self-reflection and the importance of getting out of our comfort zone. We are creatures of habit, and as we grow older the habits transform into our comfort zones. This phenomenon solidifies as we get older. Any person forced out of his comfort zone will feel out of place. This leads to him building a physical as well as psychological wall around him and filling the enclosed space with things that give him comfort. This attitude will not work in today’s world. I agree with Vaidya sir in forcing oneself out of his comfort zone by trying small things rather than being forced out of it. To get out of our comfort zones, we should focus on doing something that is challenging and difficult. This might stress us out initially but it will benefit us and make us better prepared in the long run. By doing this, the initial stress will dissipate leading us to live healthier and better lives. Another point of stress is grossly undermining our limits. We assume that we can’t perform a task because of lack of strength, will power, knowledge etc. This statement can only be valid if someone has tested their limits and came up with metrics. Otherwise, the only purpose this statement makes, is to make us feel helpless. We should focus on testing out limits and bringing positive energy into our lives. Self-reflection is according to me the most underutilised avenues of de-stressing oneself. Self-reflection makes us come back to the present. We spend most of our time obsessing on what could have been, the rosy future but not enough time in centring our self in the present. By spending some time with ourselves, we can get back to reality and be at peace with the things around us. This will also help us to focus on the more important things in life rather than worry about the issues beyond our control. Following the practices will definitely help us de-stressing and add a positive energy around us which will in-turn rise above oneself rather than worry about everything else.

Thank you, sir, for such a wonderful write up on self-reflection and testing our own limits. I can totally agree that it is very important for us to come out of our comfort zone and test our limits. One very important aspect of philosophy that Vaidya sir has covered and something that I myself has experienced is self-reflection. Reflection is all about careful thought, it is about being aware of what you are doing and carefully analyzing your inputs and outputs. The most useful purpose of self-reflection is conscious analysis and consideration of your present actions for the purpose of learning. Reflection can help to create meaning out of chaotic situations, untangle some of the complicated issues in our life. Self-reflection can help us to detect negative pattern in our life. We can use self-reflection to focus on bigger picture and it is very helpful in fully understanding about what is right and what is wrong for us and thus we take better decisions in our life. Self-reflection can also help you to face your own fears because while analyzing an opportunity we come to know about reasons for not taking up that opportunity, we realize that we fear failure or some other situation which is making us to let go of that opportunity. Self-reflection is all about improving yourself and your life.

I could not agree more on your statement. “I believe dealing with uncertainty without being stressed out is the way forward for all of us” We all face uncertainties every now and then in our life. Their effect on us could vary from being miniscule to huge. I have learned a hard way in life that the only way to deal with uncertainties or chaos is to face it, is to rise above the fears, is to rise above the negativity surrounding us and to embrace the unknown path ahead. I would like to share my experience with uncertainty and challenging limits. It was year 2012, I was young, fresh, full of life waiting to experience many things in life. It was then that uncertainty stuck me when my doctor disclosed that my reports were positive for cancer. My world came rolling down, I felt death was standing at my door, I was uncertain of my life. After days of dismay, I gathered all my strength to face the situation. I went through the strenuous treatment of chemotherapy, radiation and surgeries taking one day at a time and believing in art of healing. I fought against the devil not once but twice as there was a relapse in 2013. It was in year Dec 2013 when I breathed out of it safe and more determined towards my goals in life. While I was trying put my pieces of life together, there were many uncertainties, many questions such as what now? I was never so uncertain in my life as I was then, clueless of what has happened, what can be done now, what about my career that is lacking behind by 2 years? Can I do something about it? Do I have the strength to do something about it? After thinking for days together and introspecting on various doubts in my mind, I decided to give myself a second chance. I decided to study for GMAT, I knew it was a difficult bet as I would be studying after a gap of 10 years since my graduation, also since I was weak in Quants. But I was ready for hard work and to challenge my limits. Although I faced lot of opposition from my loved ones, as they did not want me to take stress, and as they believed I had become too fragile to take the pressure. I rebelled against them as I was determined. I studied every day, managing office and home. I gave the exam thrice as first two times I did not score as per my expectation. But I did not lose hope and took help from a tutor to prepare for quants. My hard work paid off, first when I got a good score in GMAT and later when I got a mail from SPJIMR stating that I have secured admission in PGPM program. There were tears of happiness, there was a feeling of achievement. A feeling that I cannot describe in words. Today I am here in PGPM, have the uncertainties all gone? NO. There are still uncertainties related to what next after the program? Would I secure a good job? Would I always remain cancer free? Yes, the uncertainties are there, but am I stressed about them? No, I am happy, content and smiling as I know sky is my limit.

“To rise above everything else is to rise above yourself” - Thank you, Dr Vaidya, to have beautifully described the prerequisite for self- growth. I believe, while the world is uncertain, most aspects of self-growth lie within our reach. We often tend to mistake self-knowledge for a relative component of the world outside, it is, however, the understanding of oneself. Self-knowledge is world-knowledge to us and it shall remain confined to the size of the world that we live in. Unless we ask, listen and take feedback, we are bound to be obsolete in our understanding of the world eventually. In my opinion, questioning – “Who am I? What do I want?” may well sound ancient but are also contemporary. As Dr Vaidya stated, it is important that one finds some time each day with oneself to reflect on past, present and future. We must admit that in any present moment, we perceive some goals to be impossible. However, reflecting on the past one would realise that some of those "impossible" goals stand achieved today. This exercise not only promotes self-confidence but also and the willingness to accept and drive change more often. Only when we push our limits, do we explore new limits and possibilities.

Limit – A small word that has a big impact on our lives. We grow up learning and believing in what we think are our limits. It is our experiences and fears that make us believe that we have a limit to everything we do and can do. We are slaves to our habits which quickly transform into our comfort zones. We get used to certain outcomes, certain realities, a particular way of living and accept them as our reality and start to believe that those are our limits. But are they? We say that the sky is the limit. But is it really? Have we tried to go beyond and checked our potential. In a literal sense – yes, we have. We have put human beings and machines in space. In a figurative sense then, can we not try to overcome what we believe are our limits? Since always, I have had a great fear of public speaking. I have always shivered when I spoke in class and always shied away from it. I firmly believed that a crowd of 5 to 6 people is the maximum that I can manage. Any larger group and I would go mum from fear and anxiety. I once got a chance to speak on stage on the annual day of school. I remember trying to come up with a thousand excuses to not do that, but none of them convinced my teachers. Being forced, I began practicing my speech. I started off practising in front of my parents and then with my friends, and then in front of the class and I slowly began to realise that a small group was not my limit. I could manage it on stage. This experience helped and encouraged me to push myself and try on new things and explore, if I may say, my new limits. It has made me believe that a crucial part of exploring your potential is to come out of your comfort zone and put yourself in a situation you are uncomfortable with. I would advise, one can start with things that he is interested in but never had the confidence and the courage to do so. The interest keeps driving you. Also, I completely agree with sir, in that, self - reflection takes you a long way. Organizing your thoughts and fears, analysing your actions and reactions and realizing the positives that came out of them certainly helps build your confidence. It provides a new perspective on things. Another effective way, is to take feedback from people close to you. These are the folks that will always be honest and will always encourage you to face your fears. I wish and hope that this will help you answer - “what are my limits?” and help you push your boundaries. As Celestine Chua has said – “The only limits in your life are the ones you set yourself”

Dear Prof. Vaidya, I would like to thank you for writing about this very important and ignored topic of self-imposed limits. Self-imposed limitations are thoughts, beliefs or actions that hold us back and stop us from achieving our full potential. When we set our limits, we define our boundaries based on our perception of what is achievable and what is not. This could be hazardous as we would tend to set the bar too low when we undervalue our own abilities, thereby setting an arbitrary limitation beyond which we cannot evolve. The first very important step is to visualize crossing over the limits. Visualization is a very powerful tool, it helps eliminate the fear of unknown, and hence what is believed as unachievable. In times when I feel that I have met my limits, I try and look for inspiration from others around, others who have already overcome that barrier. Participants in our PGPM program have proven to be immense source of inspiration lately. Trying to find out what others did to overcome their limits provides a potential approach. Another very important topic that you wrote about was self-realization. I am very fond of running and I utilize the time spent on road thinking about where I am, and my course of action in where I want to be. A lot of my ideation happens during my daily train commutes. As you rightly said ”the tools or means are not important”, the ability to reflect upon our actions, thoughts and aspirations is.

After reading the blog written by Prof Anil Vishnu Vaidya, I started pondering how to define that “What are the limits of an individual?” Are there any limits or it is just in the mind of an individual? If there are any limit, anywhere, how to deal with it? Human race is an intelligent race among all the species on the planet. We can decide what we want now and what we desire later in life. To achieve these objectives in life we compete with the people of our race to stay ahead of them. This competition poses a challenge upon us to manage so many things in life and keep trying for what we desire. Desire of a human being makes a limit in his mind. He tries to extend his limits while balancing his life. This act of balancing life tests our limits daily and asks for managing the stress level and being in the moment to give your best. I would try to take the example of tank water and river water to understand, how to avoid thinking about limits. Water in a tank has no life. Same water in a river flows persistently crossing all what comes on its way, nurturing the life in and around it. A man has to exceed its limit daily and work persistently while impacting the life around it; otherwise they lose the sheen of life. Limits are decided by the exuberance you exert from your personality which brings people around you and develops relationships. These relationships keep you alive and further your limits. Taking the same example of river, rivers have names everywhere in the world. This shows the relationship people share with a river. River meets so many people, animals and trees every day. River creates a relationship by being useful to them while continuously doing her job of flowing ahead with zeal. Tank water does not have name; because it lays there for some time before it spoils. A man has to flow like water being useful to the people around and develop relationship by giving. This way there is no limit to which a person can go. People help people to further limits of each other.

Dear Professor Vaidya, Thank you for such a wonderful article. I completely resonate with your statement “uncertainty and instability are the realities of today’s world”. I agree with your views on questioning self-imposed limits and importance of self-reflection. The human-will is an extraordinary gift from the almighty that enables us to accomplish impossible goals and push ourselves beyond our limits to truly achieve our greatest potential. The default human nature is to stay in the same monotonous life which eventually results in mental blockages. We can only break the shackles of self-imposed limits when our lives throw challenges and pushes us out of our comfort zone. However, we should not wait for our life events to force us to go beyond our limits. Rather, we should be in charge of our lives and discover exactly how far we can push our limits. I believe that we are surrounded by plenty of examples to draw inspiration from. For instance, reaching a score of 200 (not out) in an ODI was not a small feat. It took 20 years for Sachin Tendulkar to reach this extraordinary feat. He pushed himself beyond the limits that were defined in the world of cricketing records. A benchmark was created for other players to follow and it was demonstrated that crossing an individual score of 200 in an ODI is possible. I would also like to share my experience of dealing with instability and uncertainty and the importance of self-reflection. During my professional stint with Foster Wheeler, our organization was acquired by the Amec group. However, the decision of Amec group backfired in the next year as the crude oil prices plummeted to an all-time low of $28.0. The Amec group was already in huge debt post the acquisition of Foster Wheeler and to make matters worse, majority of the project contracts were getting postponed or cancelled. As a consequence of these events, I witnessed a huge downsizing in my organization. At that point of time, I made a conscious decision to prepare for CAT. Today when I reflect upon the past events, I realized that it was the uncertainty and instability that I faced in the last year, which prompted me to appear for CAT and eventually secure a seat in SPJIMR. Self-reflection is essentially a careful thought process. It provides us with an opportunity to solve the complex challenges that our lives throw at us by leveraging our knowledge, past learnings and experiences. Self-reflection eventually results in self-awareness which is a very critical quality in becoming an effective leader. Even the management guru Peter Drucker has said, “Follow effective action with quiet reflection. From the quiet reflection, will come even more effective action.” Self-reflection and its rewards of self-awareness are absolutely essential in the contemporary world. Self-reflection plays a pivotal role in team building, as it enables us to become increasingly aware of our natural strengths and weaknesses. We can utilize this knowledge in effective allocation of tasks and resources.

A very thought-provoking article Sir. Your words have reminded me of Ralph Waldo Emerson’s words, “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment”. I feel there are two contradictory line of thoughts. We are constantly asked to be ourselves amid this chaos and instability. On the contrary, we are also expected to change ourselves to rise above the crowd, to make an impact. We are constantly trying to be what others expect us to be. We are constantly thinking that the world cares too much about our actions. Once we realize that it is okay to be ourselves, it will take out a lot of stress from our minds. Your point regarding knowing and questioning our limits is interesting. To imagine that we have infinite energy and time can change our perspective about many things. We no longer have the excuse of “having to do too much” to shield ourselves. I can pursue any dream I want, I can learn any new talent and I am not limited by time, only by my own mindset and inertia. Once we overcome this inertia, we are capable of anything. But when we have the capacity to be anything, what is it that we want to become? What is it that we want to do next? As you mentioned, self-reflection would help us answer these questions. Recalling examples from corporate world, many companies which were market leaders once have now gone under. The first name which comes of our minds is Nokia. The inertia for change and self-denial led the once successful company into nothingness. On the other hand, companies which were able to see the signs and overcome their inertia changed the fates of their once run-down businesses. The one name that comes to my mind is Tata Steel which changed its age-old practices and methodologies to emerge as a progressive and forward-looking company. We encounter our limits every day. We have two options in every such scenario, Fight or Flight. If we decide to fight and challenge ourselves, we rise above ourselves.

Thank you sir for your refreshing words. I have read your blog more than once and reflected on it. I think I agree with the larger idea that it is important to know our self and to step outside our comfort zone. Life is never meant to be predictable nor will it be. In fact the beauty of life lies in its unpredictability. Those unexpected turns and those unanticipated events add to the thrill in life. The only way to prepare our-self better for facing this unpredictability is to know our-self. We must be conscious of our feelings, beliefs, ideas, and value system. It is disheartening that more often that not, we get so busy in developing a relationship with the outside world that we miss out on cultivating a relationship with our self. We become ignorant of our own innate desires and this is when we start loosing our identity in this VUCA world. I am no expert but my experiences of past few months have taught me that by knowing a little about ourselves, we remain neglectful of our true potential, forget about harnessing them. Little self-awareness leads to building of false walls of limits that we are hesitant to cross. These self -imposed limits are the handcuffs that hold us back in life. The key to opening this handcuff is to break through our fears and to step outside our comfort zones. I know it is easy said than done! But guess what- there is no other way out! While it might me difficult to take the first step, believe me, I can tell from my own experience, nothing is more satisfying than those subsequent steps that we take in the new world that proves us that we were worth more than what we thought of. Each step in this direction reinforces our belief in our self and makes us a confident individual who is ready to take on the world! I believe it is absolutely important in life to stop for a while, to calm down and to ask yourself- what is that I fear doing? What is stopping me? How can I overcome it? Finding answers to these questions is not going to be easy. It might take hours of self-introspection but the outcome will be worth the time. In his famous song- ‘Limitless’, Colton Dixon talks about the power of belief, the power of faith and the power of dreams that push us beyond our limits because we are unstoppable and limitless. And when we cannot let somebody else stop us, who are we to stop our selves?? It is time that we stop being hard on our self; it is time that we start trusting our capabilities and stop underestimating our power. Because we must breakdown the façade of limits to embark on our journey towards success! And once that wall is broken we shall she a whole new world- full of experiences to be lived. In the process, life shall happen!!

First of all I would like to Thank you Professor Vaidya for such intriguing words. I really enjoyed reading the article for it gives a direct hit on our mental blocks and forces us to push ourselves past them and also self-introspect on the way we work and do things. In this competitive VUCA world everything is uncertain and complex. Forget about the solutions, even the problems that we face today are quite uncertain and ever changing. But we still have to give and deliver our best in every situation. And for that we first need to accept these ever changing situations and work towards bending and adapting ourselves to all such situations and stop searching for order and meaning. So I believe the most important skill that we as budding managers should possess is of coming out of our comfort zones and making sense and logic out of all that uncertainty and ambiguity, without being stressed and frustrated. One way for it could be by preparing ourselves to do things that appear to be different and difficult. We need to face our own insecurities and work towards eliminating them to the extent we don’t seek to shield ourselves by building a tighter personal cordon and creating our own comfort zones. A second way could be to question your limits. We human beings as we grow older, define and set our limits. We set our own comfort zones and confine ourselves within them. On the contrary what we actually need to do is to question our limits, and our mental blocks. We need to instil a feeling a having infinite energy in us, with which we can possibly achieve anything and everything in our lives. But for that we have to try out new things. Face the uncertainty and ambiguity. Also, at the same time we need to believe in the fact that we humans are bound to make mistakes, and it is perfectly fine to make some. Only when we attain such a level of trust and confidence in ourselves we can work amidst uncertainty and ambiguity and reap rich results. It is lot more easier to become the person we want to be when we throw away all our beliefs that hold us back from experimenting and trying out new and uncertain things in our lives. In this context I would like to quote Neale Donald Walsch, “Life begins at the end of Your Comfort zone”. Also, the last para of your article about self-reflection is the ultimate way to assess yourself. I believe this is the best way to unplug ourselves from everything and everybody. This can help us in keeping touch with the deep part of our soul so that we can discover ourselves in true sense, and be whole for the people we genuinely care about.

Thank you so much sir. It is really inspiring. My affinity towards philosophy made me to choose this blog because I can relate my experiences to the topic effectively. The setting of context by connecting the concepts from the book “Philosophy” by Bryan Greetham to our real lives created a special impact. Introspection is the tool that I have used frequently both in my personal and professional lives. It made me to challenge the status quo and aim for betterment of situation. But sometimes I ended up judging myself that I’m not capable of doing this action. For example speaking in public and giving my opinion confidently is the trait that I always wanted to do but I feel conscious about my capabilities and restrain myself from speaking. I have consciously chosen to do an MBA from a prestigious B-School because I wanted to challenge myself and work on my weak areas by competing with best minds in India. This is where I have applied the idea that you have discussed in the blog i.e. coming out of comfort zone and dealing with uncertainty in lives. It took me multiple years to crack the admission process. But I have not given up on my decision and continued to test myself. I thank god for giving me such a great parents. They have always supported me and believed in me. My problem solving skills, support from parents and the ability to give my best in pressure yielded success up to now in my career. But I admit having the bad habit of procrastination and laziness. I also consciously feel multiple times daily that this behaviour in me stopping me to achieve my potential success. Also I believe that we become is what we continuously think about. This continuous introspection unknowingly created a virtual limit in my life to settle for small things and get contented for whatever I achieve. I have never realized that I have created these virtual limits which are hindering my progress. After going through your blog the thought of testing these limits considering the infinite time and energy that we have is the key take way. Admitting the fact that uncertainty exists everywhere and dealing with it is the way forward. This attitude struck my mind and this will be very useful to prepare my mind set for the future. Also the main takeaway that I want to remember in my life is “We will realise that one can do many things at the same time, without getting tired, exhausted and still having all energy and enthusiasm to do everything smiling without feeling burdened.” Acknowledging this ability in everyone and applying it to my life is the best possible learner message that I can take from this idea. I again thank you very much for making me to realize to counter my idea of limits and sowing the thought of approaching work by smiling without feeling burdened.

Thank you, sir, for the article which made us think twice about our preconceived notion of the limits we believe we have. I believe that the most important question that we should ask ourselves is not “what if” but “why” and “how”. Once we have answers to these questions we will strive to achieve our goal even if it means breaking out of our comfort zone and pushing our limits. We put limits on ourselves and then in our mind we decide what is possible for us instead of keeping our mind and sole free from any shackles. As Bruce Lee said: “If you always put limit on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them.” Most of us wants to be in our comfort zone and fear failure but at the same time, we want to achieve the extraordinary feat in our lives. Once we embrace failure as a learning opportunity then I believe that we can break our shackles and fly free. Once we are free from the fear of failure then we can push our limits and achieve the greater goal. We should strive to challenge ourselves every now and then and in case of failure treat it as a lesson learned for the lifetime. Inspiration is another key factor which keeps us motivated to work towards our goal. This is why asking ourselves “why” is so important. Once we have the inspiration to achieve our goal which may seem to be a daunting task at first glance but more often than not we will push our limits and in the process discover ourselves. Another important aspect is self-reflection as sir pointed out. Self-reflection is like looking into a mirror and analyzing the person we see. Self-reflection helps us to understand the ways we have been doing things and its effectiveness and review it. We question ourselves what we do, why we do it and then decide if there is any better and efficient way of doing it. This not only helps us to work on our strengths, weakness, problems, and skills but it also makes sure that we are in constant touch with our inner soul. It allows us to notice negative patterns in our life and gives us chance to rectify it and keeps us focused on the bigger picture. As someone rightly said that “Your relationship with yourself sets the tone for every other relationship you have”.

Thank you sir, for such an inspiring blog on the illusion of limitations of mind and the power of self-reflection. There is so much uncertainty in this world, and we as a humans want to avoid it in any way possible. We are so restricted by the walls of our comfort zone that the element of curiosity that drives our learnings is negligible. This way there is so much potential of a person that gets unexplored. As our Dean, Prof. Ranjan Banerjee, stated in one of its lectures that if you are willing to learn something, you need to have the curiosity to go the distance. There is no one denying the fact that everyone likes his/her comfort zone. You feel protected, and it doesn’t take much effort to stay in there. Putting extra effort to swoop out of your comfort zone stresses the majority of people. The thoughts about the unpredictability of future creates the illusion that we have limits. Then follows the sequence of excuses such as being busy, being okay the way things are, or being confused about what to do. “There are no limits. There are only plateaus and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them”- Bruce Lee. Our mind creates the plateau of efforts we are capable of executing and thus, limits the thinking process and leads to dilemmas. Technology plays a huge role in confining our thinking capacity. The ease of using the gadgets and being addictive to them shuts down the thinking. I believe there are no limits to what a mind can achieve and putting ourselves to test can do wonders. Limits, like fear, is often an illusion. One way of achieving this is by self-reflection. I am a firm believer of how reflecting can boost your imagination, thoughts and add significance to your ideas. This will add value to your curiosity and further enhance it as you go along. Having the clarity of thoughts will generate positive energy. You will feel better, full of energy and that’s the power of a curious mind. Question yourself, believe in yourself and accumulate curiosity as much as you can. The sky is not the limit, only the mind is and it can be easily overcome.

This quote tells me one thing, the limits exist only in our minds. Sounds interesting, right? Some may not agree with this, they can argue that a man has physical limits, limited energy, limited resources. Let me rephrase this, it totally depends on us, how do we overcome our limits and break our mental barriers. Breaking the mental barrier is the first step, it is overcoming the force of inertia in this situation. A very simple step to this can be to understand that the mood follows the action. The way to change the mental and physical state is to initiate an action, this action works miraculously and can initiate a chain of reactions which would not have happened if you would have waited for your emotional state to change first. On the same line of thought, I would like to give another example “The fool didn’t know it was impossible, so he did it” What is considered impossible according to conventional wisdom may well be possible, and the ignorance that is attributed to the "fool" actually lies on the side of conventional wisdom. We owe some of the greatest achievements of humanity to "fools" who were brave enough to go against the wisdom of the day and attempt to do the "impossible." It was thought to be impossible to create a heavier-than-air flying machine—until the Wright Brothers proved that it could be done, and, as a result, we now take air travel in aeroplanes for granted. So this tells us 2 things: 1) if the mindset adopted is “something is impossible”, then we will never try it in the first place or have ay reason to do so, this will prevent us from discovering that we were mistaken. 2) if the ignorant mindset is adopted, then there are no presumptions about what is impossible and what is not.

The writing has perfectly braided two underrated realities of life: the artistry of uncertainty & the importance of self-reflection. But certainly, the former is a source of concern for most of us. An ability to weave all the possibilities and impossibilities of life sounds like a seemingly suitable solution. Why is that we’re unable to do so? We often forget to be in control of the situation, and we try to control it instead. We’re frustrated and we sheepishly allow our heads & our hands to reach out for a palace of illusions, murals of which sings the tale of a comfort zone. I believe that comfort zones are capable of pampering us as though we’re infants; but it dissipates no amount of considerable enrichment. Albeit, it’s humane to seek validation, as we refuse to leave our abode of appreciation. There’s a brief linger for opportunities to knock on our doors; doors that don’t exist because we spent the yesteryears basking in the comfort of consistency. I’m a strong advocate of a quote which says, “If you’re the smartest in a room, you’re the wrong room”. It’s a risky affair of inconveniences & obscurity, without a doubt. This mediocrity, as I believe, will sweep away the crumbled remains of ego. We slowly begin to learn new things, experiment and think, paving way for us to grow, one lesson at a time. This is the magical equilibrium where we contemplate on who we are. “To rise above everything else is to rise above yourself” This line has perfectly summarized ‘Where are my limits?’. Self awareness for me is to make sense out of the things that I do; the whys and why nots. Within my limited knowledge, I believe that this is the key to unravel the breakthroughs.

Sir, I have come across blog written by you ‘Where are my Limits?’. I must compliment you on the insight which you have provided. Every human being would be overwhelmed if he/she realises that the capability is unlimited and faster the realisation the quicker they breaks the comfort zone. Human behaviour is influenced by the company in which they’ve spend more time with, if his/her friends and family are the people who prefers comfort zone, then there are less chances of his/her to break the comfort zone. As rightly pointed in the blog, that human prefer certainty which is not allowing them to take any risk. By doing so they are not realising their potential and they are missing the opportunity to learn many things about themselves. I believe that once the individual experiences the learning by coming out of comfort zone no matter even if they fails, will realise what opportunities are available outside comfort zone. To break the comfort zone it requires strong will power, dedication and mindfulness. I would like to narrate a small story of mine wherein I was satisfied with the routine life of office and home. I thought that it is not possible for me to join the Gym, however when I pushed myself out of the comfort zone and started going to gym I was able to gain my confidence and experienced the feeling of being active. After hectic office hours, work out at gym used relieve my stress. This helped me to experience the benefit of breaking the comfort zone and elevated confidence on my potential. Now I strongly believe that coming out of comfort zone and exposing yourself to uncertainty would give us more strength to face any situation. Also making yourself vulnerable to external environment may attract criticism and negative feedback, but the negative feedback will certainly help in our growth. The real learning start when you come out of your COMFORT ZONE.
