Azadi ka Amritkaal: Celebrating India’s Independence Day

August 15, 2024

The SPJIMR family celebrated the 78th Independence Day with great zeal. The celebrations commenced a week earlier with a call for participation in a poster competition on the theme, Azadi ka Amritkaal, focusing on ‘Innovators’ contributions and their role in nation building’. On August 15, the Independence day event began with the customary march past by NCC cadets across the entire Bhavan’s campus. Prof. Sajeev A. George hoisted the flag and delivered an insightful address on innovative nation builders. Quoting Tagore, he commented, “Where the mind is without fear, and the head is held high, that I feel is the true meaning of freedom.”

The celebrations then featured enthusiastic cultural performances organised by our Campus Living Committee. The exhilarating performances by the participants resonated with India’s rich heritage and unity in diversity. They also highlighted the spirit of diversity within the SPJIMR community. After the performances, the SPJIMR community competed spiritedly in a stimulating quiz on the theme of Indian history.

A gallery walk showcased all the inspiring entries from the poster competition, which presented artistic depictions of Azadi ka Amritkaal with a focus on ‘Innovators’ contributions and their role in nation building’. Following the traditional Independence Day feast shared by faculty and participants, a guided tour of the in-house composting unit at SPJIMR, organised by our Eco-champions team, offered insights into the practical application of SPJIMR’s continuous efforts towards sustainability and responsible waste management techniques.

Shelly Simon, our first-year PGDM participant, beautifully encapsulated the essence of SPJIMR’s Independence Day celebrations: “The day took us back to one of the most important chapters of our history, brought us together to celebrate the present, and ended by reminding us to be mindful of our actions and make responsible decisions for the future. Being away from home for the first time, I didn’t think I would be able to celebrate this day like I used to. But seeing everyone come together to spread the joy, I felt like I truly belonged here.”
