#DoCCDiaries: Community springs in the Bag Guler Panchayat

Sourav Agrawal, PGDM 2023-2025

I did my DoCC project with Chinmaya Organisation for Rural Development, Sidhbari, Himachal Pradesh, with Hrishikesh Padhye on the topic, ‘Study of Community Springs in the Bag Guler Panchayat’. While working on the project, I had multiple interactions with villagers. I listened to their stories about the use of water resources available near their village and the effect of the taps provided by the government in their houses.

One such conversation was with a villager in the Bachhun village. He shed light on the fact that people are abandoning traditional water sources and are shifting to being reliant on tap water. He also brought forward the fact that people have significantly reduced farming due to the prevalence of wild animals in their area, which further reduced their dependence on traditional sources. These conversations with the villagers gave us a rich understanding of the situation in the village.

In addition to the work we did with CORD, we also had the opportunity to attend the Flower Holi in Mahaavatar Baba Ashram near Palampur. The event started with instrumental music, followed by the Melodious singing of Vidhi Sharma. The musical programme continued for about 2-3 hours. During the performance, people danced to the song’s tune and enjoyed it to the fullest. After the performances were over, the Holi celebrations started. It was the first time I had experienced such a type of Holi, and I enjoyed it a lot. We played Holi to our hearts content and danced to the tune of dhol tasa. It was one of the most memorable moments that I had during my DoCC journey.

Development of Corporate Citizenship (DoCC) is a mandatory component of the management curriculum at SPJIMR. It fosters in the participants a sensitivity to and a sensibility about various societal issues. It offers participants immersive social internships across India and South Asia to engage with grassroots communities and organisations. This allows the participants to reflect on and apply their management learnings to unstructured environments.
