Brief description

The project conducted in red-light areas of Sonagachi, West Bengal, and Sonapur, Maharashtra, in collaboration with Purnata: an initiative that works on a comprehensive human trafficking prevention strategy through a collaborative and holistic approach to end human trafficking, documented the profound impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on women, particularly female sex workers (FSWs). Through interviews and discussions, it revealed significant economic hardship, health concerns, and social isolation experienced by FSWs during the pandemic. The outcome of this project is a comprehensive understanding of the challenges women face in these marginalised communities, providing valuable insights into the urgent need for targeted interventions. This outcome is a foundation for developing strategies to provide essential support, including mental health services, healthcare access, and economic empowerment programmes, aiming to build resilience among vulnerable populations in red-light areas.
