Project title: A study of the livelihood opportunities of manual scavengers in the Pune city of Maharashtra.
Participant: Prachi Salve
Batch 22
Organisation: Ambedkar Centre for Action & Research Foundation (ACAR)
Area of impact: Social Justice
The research findings highlight the challenges faced by manual scavengers in Pune, Maharashtra, predominantly from marginalised communities like the Valmiki caste group. Limited access to basic amenities and bureaucratic hurdles in obtaining caste validity certificates hinder their access to government schemes. Manual scavenging takes a toll on their physical and mental health, exacerbating their vulnerability to discrimination and stigma. Despite efforts to seek alternative livelihoods, societal biases and lack of support persist, underscoring the need to challenge caste norms and provide avenues for dignified employment.
