The primary focus areas for the organisation includes:

• Igniting awareness among citizens through Constitution Connect events
• Building capacities and mobilizing action among citizens through Citizenship Education Programme
• Developing creative curriculum content

  The organisation’s outreach is through strategic partnerships with institutions (Schools and CSOs) that work closely with citizens. The organisation is financially supported by multiple institutions and individuals alike who believe in the work they do.

At We The People, she leads a motivated team to mobilise citizens to understand and own their constitutional rights and responsibilities. With a pioneering capacity building programme on active citizenship, she has worked with more than 20,000 citizens in addressing rights and entitlement issues that they face. Her organisation works in partnership with government and private schools and community-based organisations in 5 states. Along with this intensive capacity building of teachers, community leaders and youth, she has also spearheaded media campaigns to raise awareness of the citizens constitution rights and duties. These campaigns have had substantial outreach with partners like Ministry of Youth Affairs, Zee News, Radio One, Hindi Hindustan, Gurgaon ki Awaaz, among others.

Core focus of Vinita’s work over the last 25 years has been on capacity building and empowerment of disadvantaged people, particularly those in the informal sector. During her term as Director of the NGO, International Resources for Fairer Trade, from 1996 to 2002, she pioneered methods to map and enhance conditions of work in multi-tiered supply chains in agriculture, textiles and crafts. This was followed by intensive work on issues related to homeworkers as coordinator of the ETI Homeworker programme in India. This resulted in the pivotal ETI Homeworker Guidelines, highlighting the issues of the most invisible of workers and also the formation of the ETI multi stakeholder homeworker group.

Since 2008, she has brought in a sharp focus on using the Constitutional and legal framework for issues facing citizens. As Trustee of the NGO, We, The People, she is currently deeply involved in building capacities on harnessing the power of Constitutional and legal rights for diverse groups including youth and rural women.

Vinita has a passionate interest in facilitating transformative citizen action and in advocating for constitutional rights in citizen’s everyday lives. She is also a 24×7 active citizen.
