Faculty

A rich and lively student-teacher interaction is at the heart of SPJIMR's success. Our faculty members are known to be great teachers, who can bring alive the subject, encourage critical thinking and offer a wider, holistic perspective that is critical in today's complex business environment.

Our faculty members are drawn from academia, industry, government sector and non-profits. Collectively, they bring in a wide range of experience in building and delivering knowledge and skills to prepare participants for leadership roles.

The teaching-learning process at SPJIMR is vastly enriched by a series of non-classroom initiatives through which our faculty help build among participants the right attitudes to enable them lead with purpose, meaning and with an idea of service to society.

We have more than 44 full time faculty members, of which 28 are PhDs. The average experience of the core faculty is over 18 years, with several who have come to academics after years of experience as practitioners. In addition, we have over 14 adjunct faculty and several more visiting faculty who engage with participants of various courses.

Prof. M. Suresh Rao

Professor  Rao is an I I M A alumnus who had a chequered  corporate career prior to becoming an academic. He is among the first crop of Entrepreneurship faculty in India.

Education
Professor Rao’s  schooling was largely at St Columba’s, Delhi, where he acquired an abiding interest in learning about business and in written communication.

He graduated in Engineering from MANIT, Bhopal and landed up at IIM Ahmedabad where along with two batch mates he co-founded the student magazine Indinman News. At IIM A his professional area of interest was Marketing and Human Behaviour.

Professor Rao is presently Adjunct Professor for Entrepreneurship which covers Social Entrepreneurship as well.

He started his career in the Marketing Department of a reputed truly 'nationalistic' consumer durable-to-precision fabrication firm. Following a series of ‘first time’ roles in Sales and Marketing he left the company as Deputy General Manager of the home grown Electronics Division.

Bitten by the venture bug, Prof. Rao joined an early growth stage venture in a sunrise Industry as Executive Vice President for the Western Region. Next, he moved to the recently privatised telecom sector  where he became CEO of an MNC.

With 25 plus years of varied industry practice behind him, Prof. Rao shifted to academics in year 2000 as Professor for Marketing at SPJIMR. Here, he taught the pioneering course on Marketing Implementation as he could link the concepts to his experience.This experience came in handy when he designed  the customised Marketing Course with Concept and Application Exercises for the Executive Management(EMP) Programme launched by SPJIMR in year 2005. In year 2009, he steered SPJIMR's first international programme on Doing Business in India as Programme Co-ordinator.

In year 2004, the US based Wadhwani Foundation selected SPJIMR as one of the 5 founding partners for NEN, the National Entrepreneurship Network for promoting entrepreneurship in colleges. The Faculty Advisory Board of which he was a member, nurtured member institutes to promote entrepreneurship by starting E Cells, developing faculty to build courses and in conducting B Plan events. At SPJIMR Prof. Rao set up the Center for Entrepreneurship, functioning as Chairperson and Professor for Entrepreneurship. The Center has developed the New Venture Creation course for the various MBA programmes the Institute offers and public programmes on Start Your Business and Grow Your Business. Prof Rao teaches the elective on Social Entrepreneurship to the students of the PG Programme in Development Management at SPJIMR. He has taught Entrepreneurship to the post-graduate students at EBS, Germany.

Prof Rao’s article  'Entrepreneurship - Then and Now' has been published in Forbes India and Business Today has published his article captioned 'Are SMEs Fulfilling Their Potential'.

He has an article titled Hindusthan, Bharat, India published in Business World.

Prof Rao has participated in international faculty development programmes for Entrepreneurship Faculty conducted by HBS, Babson College and Lester Center for Entrepreneurship UCLA, Berkeley. He was Member of the TechnoPreneur Promotion (TePP) Programme set up by the DST, Govt of India from year 2007 to 2013. The committee was responsible for screening innovations forwarded by individuals and institutions pan - India for commercial potential and graded funding. Being among the pioneering batch of Entrepreneurship Faculty in the country Prof. Rao has taken courses for faculty of institutions like TePP member institutioins, Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs, Gurugram and others. He was member of the Panel set up by Marico Foundation in year 2013, tasked with the job of framing the selection parameters for taking on board SMEs applying for growth mentorship under the ASCENT programme of the Foundation. Prof. Rao has served on the screening committee for national events like Power of Ideas ( IIM A), Eureka (IIT B), Confluence (BITS Pilani).
