As we get ready to start another year...

It’s been quite a year at our Institute. We have a lot to celebrate – in terms of new programmes and initiatives, collaborations, many firsts in areas as diverse as: the inaugural Sparc event, the first faculty-staff joint retreat, a fillip to the ‘R’ in SPJIMR with the launch of our first Fellow programme batch, the impending launch of our first (and possibly, the world's first) programme for returning women etc.

More than this, we should take heart from the environment that we are moving towards. It is an environment where someone with an idea feels free to take it forward, knowing that the Institution may question, but will question with a view to finding a way to say yes, rather than a reason for saying no. Initiatives such as the ‘secret Santa’, the quiz club, the SPJIMR-POMS conference, multiple events on the alumni front including a new, more inclusive Spandan,  and others are possible due to this.

It is a concept of psychological safety. It is the freedom to express yourself in the workplace.  It also means a sense that credit will be given where it is due.

We may not be fully there yet, but we seem to be headed in the right direction.

At its best, our Institute is characterised by goodness, caring for others, warmth, humour and a desire to excel. It is reflected in our Diwali functions, it is reflected in the way we come together for institutional projects, in the pride we exhibit in belonging to the SPJIMR family.

On other days, when psychological safety is threatened, we behave as most human beings do when they are reminded of occasions when they have felt let down by the key institutions in their lives.

When this happens, it is a twin failure; it is a failure of the Institute and its leadership to create the right environment, and it is a failure of the individual to recognise that it is in our self-interest to bring our best selves to work – every day, at work, home and play.

For the New Year, I wish that we can work together to create genuine psychological safety in our Institute in every pocket. I also wish that each of us can find the courage and heart to bring our best selves to the people and institutions we care about – at work, home and elsewhere.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for the role you play every day in making us stronger. Whatever we have achieved has been due largely to the quality, commitment and initiative of our people. It is a huge strength, and it will carry us far in the days to come.

Wishing you a Happy New Year.

With regards and best wishes,
Ranjan.
